Our Dance Programs

Talented Toddlers

Talented Twos is a 45-minute ballet and creative movement class. Designed for toddlers who are two by the start of classes, teachers will incorporate props, fun songs, and basic ballet movements to introduce children to the dance classroom atmosphere. Students should wear a pink leotard, pink tights, and pink ballet slippers to class. The class will perform one number in the recital, but participation in the recital is optional.

Beginning Dance Class

Song & Dance I

Song & Dance I is a 45-minute ballet and tap class for children who are three years old and potty trained by the start of classes. No prior dance experience is necessary for this level. Students use creative movement, pantomime, and fun songs in class and are introduced to basic ballet and tap steps. It is an excellent foundation class for children interested in dance as it teaches them proper dance class etiquette as well as providing an excellent collection of starting dance steps. Students should wear a pink leotard, pink tights, pink ballet slippers, and black tap shoes to dance class. The class will perform two numbers in the matinee recital, but recital participation is optional.

Song & Dance II

Song & Dance II is a 45-minute ballet and tap class for children who are four years old by the start of classes. It consists of two twenty-minute sections, one each for ballet and tap with overlap time and time to change shoes. Like Song & Dance I, students will use fun songs to learn basic ballet and tap movements. This year, there is a move towards a more formal dance class as students begin to learn more combinations of steps and how to travel across the floor. Students should wear a pink leotard, pink tights, pink ballet slippers, and black tap shoes to dance class. The class will perform two numbers in the matinee recital, but recital participation is optional.

Kinderdance

Kinderdance is a 1 hour ballet and tap class for children who are five years old by the start of classes. It consists of two half-hour sections, one each for ballet and tap. This is more of a structured dance class with additional focus on technique, steps, and combinations. Students continue working on steps across the floor and will learn how to use the barre in ballet class. Students should wear a black leotard, pink tights, pink ballet slippers, and black tap shoes to dance class. The class will perform two numbers in the matinee recital, but recital participation is optional.

Ballet & Tap (6-8 Year Old, Beginner)

Ballet & Tap is a one hour dance class offered for beginner 6-8 year olds. It consists of two thirty- minute sections, one for ballet and one for tap. Students learn the use of the barre in ballet and begin turning and spotting. The use of opposite arms is taught in tap class in centre and across the floor. Additional technique is taught and students truly grow and learn quite a bit at this level. Students should wear a black leotard, pink tights, pink ballet slippers, and black tap shoes to dance class. The class will perform two numbers in the matinee recital, but recital participation is optional.

Tap, Ballet, Jazz (6-8 year old, experienced dancers)

This class is an extension of our traditional ballet & tap class and offers jazz. Each subject is taught for thirty minutes. Students use the barre in ballet and begin turning and spotting. The use of opposite arms is taught in tap class in centre and across the floor. Additional technique is taught and students truly grow and learn quite a bit at this level. Beginner jazz steps are introduced, and students work to increase their flexibility through fun movements and music. Students should wear a black leotard, pink tights, pink ballet slippers, and black tap shoes to dance class. The class will perform two numbers in the matinee recital, but recital participation is optional.

Tap, Ballet, Jazz I

Ballerina Puts on Slippers

TBJ I is a one and a half hour class offered to students ages seven and eight who have at least two years prior dance experience in ballet and tap. Each subject is taught in the above order for thirty minutes. The main focus in ballet is technique with continued learning at the barre, turning across the floor, and centre combinations. In tap rhythm, opposition, and more intricate steps are worked on. In jazz students learn basic jazz steps in centre and across the floor and work on stretching and adding style to their dancing. Students should wear a black leotard, pink tights, pink ballet slippers, and black tap shoes to dance class. The class will perform a jazz & tap number in the matinee recital, however participation is optional.

Tap, Ballet, Jazz II

TBJ II is a two-hour class that consists of thirty minutes of tap, forty-five minutes of ballet, and forty five minutes of jazz. This class is offered to students ages 8, 9, and 10, who have at least three years prior dance experience in ballet and tap and at least one prior year of jazz. The students dancing really develops at this point as they are required to become more independent in their skills. Students are expected to know their choreography from week to week and be able to perform it independently. Students should wear a black leotard, pink tights, pink ballet slippers, and black tap shoes to dance class. The class will perform three numbers in the matinee recital, however participation is optional.

Tap, Ballet, Jazz III

TBJ III is a two and a half-hour class taught by two teachers. The students will have one-hour class with a ballet instructor, which is required. It will be followed by two forty-five-minute classes in tap and jazz. This class is offered to 8, 9, and 10 year olds who have successfully completed TBJ II or who have four years of dance experience, dancing two in jazz. Ballet technique, additional steps, as well as positions of the body are taught as students' ballet work is refined and improved upon. Steps and rhythms become more intricate in tap class, and various styles of dance are introduced in jazz class. Students should wear a black leotard, pink tights, pink ballet slippers, black tap shoes, and black jazz shoes to dance class. The class will perform three numbers in the matinee recital, however participation is optional.

Dance Class

9 to Teen Classes

Classes for beginner students ages nine through teen are offered in two different combination classes. We offer a tap, ballet, and jazz class that is one and a half hours long and consists of thirty minutes of each subject. We also offer a two-hour class consisting of thirty minutes of tap and forty-five minutes of both ballet and jazz for students who fall into this age group with only one year of dance experience. Finally, a more advanced class is offered at a third level consisting of forty-five minutes each of tap and jazz and one hour of ballet. In any of the classes, ballet is the only class that is required. Keeping their age group in mind, the class moves fairly quickly and will learn a great deal throughout the course of the year. Various styles of jazz are taught, including contemporary steps and movements. Students should wear a black leotard, pink tights, pink ballet slippers, black tap shoes, and black jazz shoes to dance class. The class will perform two numbers in the matinee recital, but recital participation is optional.

Levels I-IV

Students at these intermediate levels are offered classes in ballet, tap, jazz, lyrical, hip-hop, and modern. Students should be at least nine years old entering into the intermediate level and should have several years of dance experience. Ballet is required for all dancers. Students are offered two ballet classes per week, and are strongly encouraged to take both. Only one of the two ballet classes is performance-geared; the other is a technique class. Students, although not required to, are very strongly encouraged to take classes in all disciplines offered. This makes for a well-rounded dancer. Placement classes for new students are offered at no charge at this level to ensure proper placement. Students should wear a black leotard, pink tights, pink ballet slippers, tan tap shoes, and black jazz shoes to dance classes. Each class will perform one number in the evening recital, with the exception of the technique ballet class. Recital participation is optional.

Levels V-VIII

Students at these advanced levels are offered classes in ballet, pointe, variations, tap, jazz, lyrical, hip hop and modern. Students should be at least eleven years old entering into the more advanced levels and should have years of dance experience. Placement in the advanced level is by PMD teacher request only or by placement classes offered by the director. Ballet is required for all dancers. Depending on the level, students are offered 2-5 ballet classes per week, and are required to take a minimum of two classes if the student is in pointe. Some ballet classes are performance classes and others are technique only. Students, although not required to, are very strongly encouraged to take classes in all disciplines offered. This makes for a well-rounded dancer. Students should wear a black leotard, pink tights, pink ballet slippers, tan tap shoes, and black jazz shoes to dance classes. Please refer to our dress code for correct leotard & shoe styles. Each class will perform one number in the evening recital, with the exception of the technique ballet class. Recital participation is optional.

Adult

Dance classes for adults are offered in tap and hip-hop. Classes are one hour long. No prior dance experience is necessary. There is no specific dress code for this level, but participants are asked to wear comfortable dancewear to classes.
